The Goethe-Institut New York is pleased to announce that Avi Feldman has been awarded the 2018 curatorial residency within its MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38 program. Feldman has been living and working as a curator in Germany since 2009.

The curatorial residency, which includes a grant and the mandate to program Ludlow 38 for a full calendar year, was awarded by an international jury composed by Larissa Harris (Queens Museum of Art), Christian Rattemeyer (Museum of Modern Art), and Nicolaus Schafhausen (Kunsthalle Wien). Feldman’s proposal to devote his residency to exposing the pervasiveness of legal systems and his commitment to working with artists, scholars, and activists at the intersection of art and law was regarded as timely and necessary by the jury.

Feldman will organize his program under the framework of “The Agency for Legal Imagination” and will explore both existing and imagined relations between law and the visual arts in a variety of formats. The program will launch on February 8, 6–9pm with We Indict!, an exhibition about grassroots activism, social engagement, and creating alternatives to existing legal systems. Presented in collaboration with TRIBUNAL – Unraveling the NSU Complex, an initiative by hundreds of anti-racism activists in Germany, the exhibition unravels neo-Nazi terror and institutional racism in Germany by exposing the crimes and networks of the extreme rightwing organization known as National Socialist Underground (NSU). The exhibition will function as a counter-archive to the German legal system and will include images, videos, and documents collected by the Tribunal and created by Ulf Aminde, Spot the Silence, SPOTS Audiovisual Micro-Interventions, and Forensic Architecture.

Throughout 2018, the Agency for Legal Imagination will also host Fictive Witness, a series of lecture-performances initiated by Alex Strada and Tali Keren. The series opens on February 13, 7pm at the Goethe-Institut (30 Irving Place) with Kendall Thomas, co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School.

Further programming in 2018 will include The Art & Law Complex by Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, a project focusing on legal and artistic education and practice. Tali Keren’s first solo exhibition in the US will deal with the entanglement between state, religion, and law. The artist’s research on Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin’s rejected 1776 design for the Great Seal of the United States will serve as a lens through which she explores Judeo-Christian ideology and its effect on immigration. In another US solo debut, Jonas Staal will install a site-specific architectural construction at Ludlow 38 examining the New World Summit, an organization prompting alternative justice through artistic and political activism founded by the artist in 2012.

Avi Feldman (born 1976, Montréal, Canada) is a curator and writer based in Tel Aviv, Berlin, and Dresden. Feldman holds a law degree and has been a member of the Israeli Bar since 2005.
